LAB 02 - Working with Assignment Groups/Smart Groups

INTRODUCTION

TASKS

TASK 1 - Set up Organization Groups

In this task, you modify the top-level OG in your student tenant and create two lower-level OGs.

  1. From the Workspace ONE UEM console main menu, navigate to Groups & Settings > Groups > Organization Groups > Details
  2. Review/Make the following changes
    • Group ID: [yournameDDMMYY] Change the current group ID to reflect your fullname and today's date. i.e, johndoe010922
    • Country: [Select your Country]
    • Locale: [Select your Locale]
    • Time Zone: [Select your Time Zone]
    • Click Save.
    • Refresh your browser to view the updated OG name

Note: Enrolling The Group ID is a unique value used specifically for future devices. Create a Group ID that is easy to remember. The Group ID is not case-sensitive, but cannot contain spaces or special characters:
• In this lab, the Group ID value is a combination of your name and the day, month, and year (DD-MM-YY).

• If you receive an error about the Group ID being in use, you can add your initials to the Group ID value or use another unique value as the Group ID.

 

  1. Click the Add Child Organization Group tab and configure the settings:
    • Name: Employee Owned
    • Group ID: employeeowned-##, where ## are your initials i.e, employeeowned-jm
    • Type: [Leave default]
    • Country: [Select your Country]
    • Locale: [Select your Locale]
    • Time Zone: [Select your Time Zone]
    • Click Save.
  2. From the Workspace ONE UEM console main menu, expand the Organization Group dropdown menu and select your top-level OG,Refresh your browser to view the updated OG Name, Employee Owned.
  1. Click the Add Child Organization Group tab and configure the settings:
    • Name: Organization Owned
    • Group ID: organizationowned-##, where ## are your initials i.e, organizationowned-jm
    • Type: [Leave default]
    • Country: [Select your Country]
    • Locale: [Select your Locale]
    • Time Zone: [Select your Time Zone]
    • Click Save.
  2. Verify the OG structure:
    • Lower-level OG 1: Employee Owned
    • Lower-level OG 2: Organization Owned
TASK 2 - Create Assignment Groups

In this task, you add an assignment groups in your Workspace ONE UEM student tenant.

Although we will create assignment groups for iOS and Android devices in this task, the Windows assignment group will be the one we use in future Labs

  1. If you are no longer logged into the Workspace One UEM Console refer to the steps outlined in TASK 1 to login then continue with the steps below.
  2. From the Workspace ONE UEM console main menu, navigate to Groups & Settings > Groups > Assignment Groups
  3. Click +Add Smart Group
  4. Under Name enter Windows 10 Devices
  5. Leave the selected Criteria for the Choose Type selection
  6. Expand the Platform and Operating System tree
  7. In the first Any drop-down menu, select Windows Desktop.
    • Leave the other drop-down selections to their default selections.
  8. Click Save
  9. Following these steps, create two more Smart Groups, one filtering for only iOS devices, and the other only filtering for Android devices. Name the groups iOS Devices and Android Devices, respectively
TASK 3 - Create Basic User

In this task, you create a basic user account in the Workspace ONE UEM console.

  1. From the Workspace ONE UEM console main menu, expand the Organization Group drop-down menu and select your top-level OG, [your-lastname]
  2. Navigate to Accounts > Users > List View
  3. Select Add > Add User and fill-in the user information on the General page:
    • Security Type: Basic
    • Username: [firstname_lastname_DDMMYY]

      Note: Create a unique username using your first and last name plus today's date. Record this as your [username]
    • Password: VMware1!
    • Confirm Password: VMware1!
    • Full Name: [your firstname and lastname]
    • Email Address: [your personal email address]
  4. Click Save

This account creation will initiate a Workspace ONE UEM User Activation email to the email address provided above. The information in this email will be used to enroll a device.
